NNTP vs HTTP on Easynews

Easynews offers two ways to access Usenet: through a Web-based interface (HTTP) or by using a traditional newsreader (NNTP). Both methods provide access to the same newsgroups, but the experience, speed, and level of customization differ.

What Is NNTP?

NNTP (Network News Transfer Protocol) is the original method of accessing Usenet. It requires a newsreader app, such as SABnzbd or NZBGet, to connect directly to the Usenet servers. With NNTP, the software retrieves articles based on headers, NZBs, or newsgroup browsing.

This method supports multiple connections and SSL encryption for secure access. It’s preferred by advanced users who want more control over search, automation, and integration with Indexers.

What Is HTTP Access?

HTTP access uses the Easynews Web interface, which can be accessed via the Easynews member's area. There’s no need to install or configure a newsreader. Just log in through your browser to search and view Usenet articles using the built-in search engine and thumbnail previews.

HTTP access is ideal for those who prefer a visual, browser-based experience. All access is encrypted and usage counts toward your plan’s HTTP usage limits.

Key Differences

Feature NNTP Access HTTP Access

Which Method Should You Use?

Choose NNTP if you prefer working with automated tools, newsreaders, or Indexers. This method suits users who want a customizable experience and already use third-party tools.

Choose HTTP if you prefer simplicity, want a visual interface, or don’t want to manage a separate newsreader. It's ideal for casual users and those accessing Usenet through a browser.

No matter which method you choose, Easynews provides the fullest article retention and secure access to newsgroups.
